NZARM Webinar - Treatment wetland construction and performance in the Bay of Plenty

NIWA and DairyNZ have developed practical and technical 'Constructed treatment wetland guidance' to help those looking to design and build treatment wetlands to treat nutrients and sediment from mixed agricultural drainage water.

The Waihi Estuary Catchment in the Bay of Plenty region proudly hosts two of the five nationally constructed treatment wetland demonstration and monitoring sites established with these design principles.

Jackson Efford from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council will introduce the catchment setting and practical logistics of the two wetland constructions, and Dr Brandon Goeller will discuss the wetland function and preliminary water quality performance data.

Webinar Presenters

Jackson Efford is the Principal Advisor for Land & Water at Bay of Plenty Regional Council, supporting the Land Management Team's efforts to improve water quality in Focus Catchments. His role works closely with other key Council teams such as science, policy and regulation, as well as partnerships with central government agencies, CRI's, NGOs, industry, and community. Prior to joining the Bay of Plenty Council five years ago, Jackson was in the Waikato Regional Council's Catchment Management Team and has a background in the sciences and ecological restoration through his time at Waikato University and their Environmental Research Institute.

Dr Brandon Goeller is a NIWA Riparian and Wetland Scientist with a background in applied catchment ecology, hydrology and biogeochemistry. Brandon's research during his PhD (2015-2018) until the present has examined how multifunction riparian buffers, constructed wetlands, and other interceptive diffuse pollution mitigations can improve water quality, boost ecosystem functions, and improve ecosystem health in agriculturally impacted waterways. Brandon was the project manager and was the co-lead with Chris Tanner on the MPI-funded Sustainable Land Use and Climate Change Freshwater Management project 'Quantifying constructed wetland contaminant attenuation'.
