In New Zealand today practitioners of natural resource management are grappling with how to adequately respond in a world where the issues and threats seem more complex than in the past. This has led to diverse responses to these issues in different regions, rather than the more nationally unified approach of years gone by.

We need new ways to think about natural resource management challenges in the context of the increased complexity and uncertainty that we have to deal with.

A resilience approach recognises that there is a “gathering storm” of threats: land use change, economic volatility, climate change and volatility, loss of biodiversity, species extinction, nutrient enrichment of water and so on.

Australian keynote speakers David Salt and Paul Ryan are leaders in the discipline and application of Resilience Thinking.

Sessions will cover the following topics (day one, and day two before morning tea)

  • Origins and developments in Natural Resource Management
  • Thought frameworks in this millennium. (These include systems and resilience thinking, natural capital and ecosystem services)
  • Policy and action – Discussion using examples of the Tukituki (a Hawke’s Bay catchment plan) and forestry.
  • Personal and Social Resilience
  • Community – Models and examples of participation, projects and governance.
  • Science and Natural Resource Management in NZ

Field trips on days two and three will visit a range of sites to present the complexity, linkages and some of the unresolved issues we are grappling with. We will link the presentations from day one with the discussions at these sites. Field trip site visits include:

  • Tutira lake catchment: A site of well documented land use change, research, and complex challenges.
  • Karamu Stream: Work on this stream now strives to incorporate and link multiple values and objectives which sometimes involve trade-offs.
  • Landwise: an organisation with a focus on the development and promotion of sustainable crop production, and management systems, practices and technologies that assist this goal
  • Tukituki catchment: Two farm visits to discuss implementation of a catchment plan, and planting to maximise ecosystem services.
