We have a number of awards that are presented at our Annual NZARM Conference.
We have a number of awards that are presented at our Annual NZARM Conference.
The award is intended to encourage members of NZARM to further their careers in soil conservation and resource management and may be used for relevant projects or assignments in Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.
The Lance McCaskill Award is an award for members of the Association that was initially financed from the royalties received from the book Hold this Land written by Lance McCaskill.
When the book went out of print, the Association agreed to continue the award on an ad hoc basis as funds allowed.
Past recipients have used the award to assist with expenses in attending overseas.
Awards are normally in the range of $1000 but may be more, or less, depending on the merit of the proposal and the state of the Association's finance at the time.

This award can be conferred on any member of the Association in recognition of any special contribution to resource management in Aotearoa New Zealand. The contribution should be consistent with the objectives of the Association, and be of significance in that it promotes the philosophy, science or practice of resource management.
The award is different from the Honorary Member category in that an Honorary Member has given outstanding service to the philosophy, science or practice of resource management. The Outstanding Contribution Award would not necessarily look at service, but rather at the significance of a particular contribution that the recipient has made.

Nominations for the award shall be submitted in writing to the Executive Committee via NZARM secretariat secretariat@nzarm.org.nz at any time up to one month prior to the Annual Conference, and shall be confirmed by majority vote by the Executive Committee. Any member of the Association can submit a nomination. The President of the Association shall present the award at the Annual Conference in person. There should not be any requirement that the award is presented annually, nor should there be any limit on the number of awards that may be presented in any one year. If the Award Recipient is not at the Annual Conference, the Executive shall be responsible for presenting the award to the recipient at a later date. It is possible for a member to receive more than one award at different times.
This award has two separate categories, and is presented annually at the Conference Dinner. The first special award is for NZARM members, as endorsed by the Executive Committee. The second special award is recommended by the Conference Committee (this award can be made to either members or non-members of NZARM).
The first Special Award is for NZARM members, retired members or honorary members, and can be for any particular achievement, contribution, project, or input that the Executive Committee considers appropriate. It may vary from perseverance over time to a particular project, resource management activity, or simply making an extra effort to promote the objectives of the Association.
The second Special Award can be for NZARM members or non-members. It is made on the recommendation of the organising committee of the Annual Conference, and would apply to someone within their region. The award would be to recognise a local person's contribution to resource management issues, and could pertain to their contribution locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally. This would allow the local committee to have an input into the awards process and provide them with an opportunity to acknowledge a particular person from their region. The recommendation would need to be ratified by the Executive.
Both Special Awards are in the form of a framed certificate.
Nominations for the NZARM members Special Award shall be submitted in writing to the Executive Committee at any time via NZARM secretariat secretariat@nzarm.org.nz up to one month prior to the Annual Conference. Any member of the Association can submit a nomination. Where there is more than one nomination for the NZARM members Special Award, the final decision shall be by majority vote of the Executive Committee.
The recommendation for the second Special Award shall be forwarded by the organizing committee to the Executive Committee prior to the Conference allowing for sufficient time for the recommendation to be ratified by the Executive Committee and to arrange for the Certificate to be printed.
The President of the Association shall present the awards at the Annual Conference dinner. Ideally, the Executive Committee and Organizing Committee should endeavour to have the award recipients attend the Annual Conference dinner and receive their award in person. However, if the Award Recipient is not at the Annual Conference, the Executive shall be responsible for presenting the award to the recipient at a later date.
The Awards shall be called the "NZARM Special Award - 2017" (or the relevant year that the award is presented).
The awards shall include a brief description of the reasons for the award and that it has been on the recommendation of the Executive Committee (for the NZARM members' only award) or on the recommendation of the Conference Organising Committee, and ratified by the Executive Committee (for the second special award).
